What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how children learn, communicate, and interact with the world around them. Autism is called a "spectrum" because it affects each child differently - some children with Autism may be nonverbal, while others speak fluently; some may have intellectual disabilities, while others have average or above-average intelligence.
Common Characteristics of Autism: Differences in social communication and interaction, repetitive behaviors or restricted interests, sensory sensitivities to sounds, lights, or textures, challenges with transitions and changes in routine, difficulty understanding social cues and non-verbal communication, and strengths in pattern recognition, memory, or focused interests.
